In the midst of a hectic and distractingly sunny Spring quarter, I decided to pile on more responsibilities by applying for two amazing job opportunities. I applied to be a writing tutor at the Odegaard Writing and Research Center and the LSJ/POL S/JSIS Writing Center, fresh after being accepted into the LSJ major. I had used both writing centers multiple times throughout the year and knew firsthand that that they were wonderful resources. Because I had only taken three LSJ classes at the time, I was barely a "junior" in credits (one must be a junior or a senior to apply for the LSJ Writing Center), and because I knew that the positions were highly competitive, I was pretty sure I was not going to get either job. However, I still spent a lot of time working on my letters of interest. I tried to emphasize how my personal beliefs aligned with each Writing Center's philosophy, and communicate my enthusiasm for each position. I was very surprised when I was selected to interview for the positions, and I was even more shocked when I was offered both jobs! Looking back, I think that enthusiasm played a huge role in my success.
After this, I was faced with a difficult decision: should I accept both job offers, or pick only one? I really wanted to work at both writing centers. However, I ended up choosing the OWRC because I hoped to work at the Washington State Senate during the following Winter Quarter, which would entail taking a quarter off of school. I figured that because the OWRC was bigger, that would allow me the flexibility to potentially take that opportunity (the LSJ Writing Center only had eight tutors, whereas the OWRC had approximately sixty!) It was very hard for me to turn down the LSJ Writing Center opportunity, but ultimately I think I made the right decision. And as you can later see, I ended up working for the Senate during my second year!
I have attached my application for the OWRC, which I spent a lot of time on! In retrospect I can find a few typos, but I still got the job, so they gave me a little bit of grace :)
